Over time, the skin around the eyes can lose its firmness, and heavy eyelids can make the face look more tired or heavy than you feel. Surgery on the upper eyelids can create a more open, fresh and harmonious expression, while preserving the natural shape of the eye.
At Caolín, the treatment is always planned individually, with a focus on natural results and respect for your features.
At a glance
Upper eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and, where relevant, prominent fatty tissue in the upper eyelid are removed. The incision is placed discreetly in the natural crease of the eyelid, so that the scar almost disappears into the skin's own lines.
The procedure is one of the most common in cosmetic facial surgery, and with good reason. Technically it is relatively gentle, requires only a short recovery and typically gives a very noticeable and long-lasting result. For many, it is the single treatment that gives the greatest visible change to the face for the least possible effort.
The skin of the eyelids is some of the thinnest and most delicate on the whole body, which also makes it particularly exposed to the changes that come with age. The most common signs that upper eyelid surgery may be relevant are:
Excess skin on the upper eyelid that falls down over the eyelid crease and gives a heavier, more closed look to the eye area.
A look of tiredness or heaviness in the eyes that does not reflect how you actually feel.
Prominent fat deposits in the inner corner of the upper eyelid, which give a puffy feeling.
The skin of the upper eyelid hangs down so far that it affects your vision, particularly in the outer part of the field of vision.
A drooping eyebrow contributes to the excess skin on the upper eyelid, and it can sometimes be difficult to judge for yourself whether the cause is a drooping eyebrow or genuine excess skin on the eyelid. A drooping eyebrow often creates excess skin on the outer part of the eyelid. By lifting the eyebrow to its ideal position, the genuine excess skin on the eyelid can be visualised. A brow lift can therefore reduce or eliminate the need for eyelid surgery if you have drooping eyebrows. At the consultation, the surgeon assesses what is right for you.

Good to know
Here you will find the whole process step by step — from consultation to the first weeks at home. If there is anything you cannot find an answer to, bring it up at your consultation.
The procedure itself is performed under anaesthetic, so you feel nothing during it. Afterwards there is typically mild tenderness and tightness in the eyelid for the first few days, which is easily managed with ordinary over-the-counter painkillers. Most people describe it as very manageable.
The scar is placed in the natural crease of the eyelid, the line that already exists in the skin's own structures. It is therefore camouflaged naturally and is usually almost invisible once fully healed. At Caolín, scar placement and uncompromising suturing are an integral part of the surgical work.
Technically the procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic, but at Caolín we most often choose a general anaesthetic, as it gives the best conditions for the surgeon and the most comfortable experience for the patient. If the procedure is combined with other procedures, a general anaesthetic is always the right choice.
No, we are careful to remove only the fat pads that create a bulge towards the nose. The other fat pads around the eye give natural volume and contribute to a youthful look.
We recommend not wearing contact lenses for at least two weeks after the surgery, as the eyes are more sensitive during the healing phase. Glasses can be worn from the day after.
Yes, it is very common to treat both eyelids in the same session. It gives a complete, harmonious result across the whole eye area and requires only one course of anaesthesia and recovery.
Many patients see a clear and positive difference within the first two weeks. The final result, with the scar fully matured and all swelling subsided, is seen gradually over 3-6 months.
The result is long-lasting. The ageing process continues naturally, but from a lifted starting point. Skin quality, lifestyle and genetics all affect how long it lasts.
Yes, and it is one of our most requested combinations. The eyelid surgery removes the excess skin, while the Babylift lifts the brows, the outer corner of the eye and the upper part of the cheeks. Together they give a complete, harmonious and natural result across the whole upper face.
The recovery is shorter than for most other facial surgery procedures. For the first few days the eyes will be swollen, tender and slightly discoloured – this is normal and subsides quickly. Many find that the swelling is markedly reduced after just 7–10 days.
− Cold compresses for the first 48 hours relieve swelling and discomfort.
− Keep your head raised for the first few days, including at night.
− Time off work: Approx. 1 week.
− Socially presentable: Most people are ready after 10–14 days.
− Contact lenses: Avoid for 2 weeks after the surgery.
− Sport and strenuous activity: Avoid for 3–4 weeks.
− Sun on the scars: Avoid for at least 12 months, use at least SPF 50.
− Final result: Seen gradually over 2–3 months, once the scar has matured and the swelling has fully subsided.
The result is long-lasting. The ageing process continues naturally, but from a lifted starting point.
Upper eyelid surgery is a well-documented and safe procedure with very few serious complications. The most relevant are bleeding, infection, temporary dryness or irritation of the eye, asymmetry and, in rare cases, difficulty closing the eye fully immediately after the surgery. All risks are reviewed thoroughly and individually at the consultation.
Every treatment journey at Caolín starts with a thorough, no-obligation consultation, where the surgeon assesses your skin, the anatomy of the eyelid and the overall proportions of your face. We give you honest advice about what the procedure can do for you and whether there are complementary treatments that could further enhance the result.
You are welcome to bring someone with you, and you can always contact us with questions along the way.
The process
The process starts with a thorough consultation, where you meet your plastic surgeon in calm, reassuring surroundings. Here we talk about your wishes, your expectations and the changes you would like to achieve.
The surgeon assesses the skin around your eyes, the anatomy of the eyelids and the overall balance of your face to make sure the treatment is right for you. Together you will also go through the surgical process, expected healing and the things that are important to know before you make your decision. It is important to us that you feel well informed, at ease and met with both expertise and understanding throughout the entire process.
Once your treatment plan is in place, we guide you thoroughly through the preparations leading up to the day of surgery. Among other things, we go through medication, supplements and other factors that can affect bleeding, healing and the final result.
The surgery is most often performed under local anaesthetic, and you will receive thorough information about how the day will unfold. On the day of surgery, you will be welcomed by our team, and the surgeon carefully marks the area so that the treatment is tailored precisely to your anatomy and features.
During the surgery, the incision is placed discreetly in the natural crease of the eyelid, so that the scar is later as discreet as possible. Excess skin and, where relevant, smaller fat deposits are gently removed to create a lighter, more open look around the eyes.
The entire treatment is performed with great precision and respect for the natural anatomy of the eye. The goal is always a result that looks fresh and harmonious – without looking operated on.
After the surgery, you can usually go home shortly after the treatment. For the first few days, it is normal to experience swelling, slight tightness and bruising around the eyes, which is a natural part of the healing process.
We recommend that you take it easy, keep your head slightly raised and gently cool the area as instructed.
Your journey begins with a personal consultation. Here we go through your wishes and options, so that together we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
