Nipples vary naturally in shape, size and position. For some people, inverted or enlarged nipples can affect their self-confidence and body image, or cause practical discomfort in everyday life. With a minor surgical correction it is possible to improve the appearance of the nipples and create a more harmonious, balanced look.
At Caolín, the treatment is always tailored individually, with a focus on natural results, a high level of surgical precision and a process in which you feel reassured all the way.
At a glance
No two nipples are the same. Shape, size and position vary naturally from woman to woman, and there is no one "right" appearance. Even so, many women with inverted, enlarged or asymmetrical nipples find that it affects their self-confidence. For some it is about practical discomfort in everyday life, for others a sense of imbalance in the proportions of the breast. The procedure itself is relatively gentle, but the change it brings is often experienced as marked.

At Caolín we offer three kinds of nipple correction:
This is one of the most common reasons for seeking correction. The nipple is drawn inwards instead of pointing outwards – either constantly or at times – because tight connective tissue structures or milk ducts hold it back. The condition is congenital in many people and is entirely harmless, but it can cause practical problems, for example in connection with breastfeeding.
Some women find that the size and length of their nipples cause practical discomfort and can affect their self-image. Nipple reduction is a cosmetic operation that aims to make overly long or prominent nipples smaller and more proportionate to the rest of the breast.
The darker area of skin around the nipple, also known as the areola, can seem disproportionately large compared with the rest of the breast for some women. With an areola reduction, the size and shape are adjusted to suit your wishes and create a more natural overall look.
All nipple corrections can be combined with a breast augmentation or a breast lift to achieve the most balanced result.

Good to know
If there's anything you can't find an answer to, bring it along to your consultation.
Nipple correction is a gentle, well-documented procedure with very few complications. The most relevant are infection, bleeding, a temporary or permanent change in sensation in the nipple, and in rare cases recurrence – that is, an inverted nipple drawing itself back in again.
Yes. In the vast majority of cases.
It depends on the degree of inversion and the technique chosen. But there is always a risk that the ability to breastfeed is reduced.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic (or general anaesthetic), so you feel nothing during it. Afterwards, there is typically mild tenderness and tightness in the area for the first few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Yes, nipple correction is frequently combined with, for example, a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation, where the position and size of the nipple are adjusted as part of the procedure anyway.
Every treatment journey at Caolín begins with a thorough, no-obligation consultation, where we take the time to understand your wishes, assess your anatomy and advise you on the best options. It is important to us that you leave the consultation with clarity, confidence and everything you need to make your decision.
You are welcome to bring someone with you, and you can always contact us with questions while you are making up your mind.
A temporary change in sensation is relatively common and is caused by the nerves in the area being affected during the procedure. For most people, sensation returns within weeks to months. Permanent loss of sensation does occur, but is rare.
The incision is placed discreetly at the transition between the pigmented area of skin (the areola) and the surrounding skin, where it is naturally camouflaged. The scar is usually very thin and discreet, and fades further with time.
No, the reduction is permanent. The tissue that has been removed does not grow back. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can, however, affect the appearance of the nipple afterwards.
Yes, for most correction techniques a local anaesthetic is sufficient. If the correction is combined with larger breast procedures, a general anaesthetic is preferred.
The process
The process begins with a thorough consultation, where you meet your plastic surgeon in calm, reassuring surroundings. Here we take the time to understand your wishes, your expectations and the thoughts you have had about the treatment.
Together we assess the anatomy of the nipples, the quality of the skin and the things you would like corrected. Whether it involves inverted nipples, enlarged nipples or asymmetry, the treatment is planned around your individual wishes and anatomical starting point.
We also go through the options available, what you can expect from the result and the things it is important to know before you make your decision.
It is important to us that you feel reassured, well informed and met with both expertise and understanding throughout the process.
Once your treatment plan is in place, we guide you thoroughly through all the preparations leading up to the day of surgery. You will receive information about medication, supplements, smoking and other factors, among other things, that can affect safety, wound healing and the final result.
Depending on the extent of the treatment, the surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, and this is planned together with the surgeon at your consultation. On the day of surgery, you arrive wearing comfortable clothes, and our team makes sure you feel calm, well informed and ready before the treatment begins.
The extent of the procedure and the choice of anaesthetic depend on what is to be corrected and to what degree.
For inverted nipples, small discreet incisions are made in the pigmented area of skin (the areola), where the tight connective tissue structures are released so the nipple can return to its natural, outward position. The incision is closed with small, fine stitches, and the result is a nipple that stays permanently everted.
For overly long or large nipples, the excess tissue is removed with a precise, gentle technique that restores the nipple's natural shape and proportion. Every effort is made to preserve sensation as well as possible.
For an overly large or irregular areola, excess skin is removed so that the size and shape can be adjusted to sit naturally with both the breast and the nipple. Emphasis is placed on symmetry and uncompromising suturing to achieve the most discreet scars possible.
After the procedure, a protective dressing is applied to support healing and protect the area in the first period after the surgery.
After the surgery, you can go home the same day in most cases. If the treatment has been performed under general anaesthetic, you are monitored by our staff until you are ready to go home.
In the days that follow, the area will often be slightly swollen, tender or show minor bruising, which is a natural part of the healing process. In general, the surgery involves relatively little pain, but your body still needs rest in the first period.
It is important to avoid pressure on the nipples and to limit strenuous physical activity in the first period, so the tissue has the best possible conditions in which to heal. The result develops gradually as the swelling subsides and the tissue settles.
You are followed closely throughout the process, and we are always available if you have questions along the way.
Your journey begins with a personal consultation. Here we go through your wishes and options, so that together we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
