For many people, removing breast implants is a personal decision, and it can be about comfort, aesthetics, medical necessity or the wish to return to a more natural starting point.
At Caolín, we always meet this decision with expertise, understanding and respect for the change it can represent – both physically and personally.
At a glance
At Caolín, we often combine implant removal with fat grafting. This is a technique in which the body's own fat is used to restore natural, soft fullness and improve the shape of the breast, without a new foreign body. For many patients, this combination gives a markedly better result than removal alone, and it is our preferred approach when the anatomy allows it.
There are many paths to this decision, and some of the most common reasons are:
What felt right ten years ago does not necessarily suit the person you are today. Many women want a more natural look that sits better with a changed lifestyle or sense of their body.
A tight, hard capsule around the implant can cause discomfort, pain and visible deformation, and in many cases makes removal (or replacement) necessary.
If an implant has ruptured, removal is recommended. A rupture often causes no immediate symptoms, but it may be noticed as a change in the shape of the breast – a scan can confirm the suspicion.
Women with very old implants, or implants from brands that have been withdrawn from the market, increasingly choose preventive removal.
Some women simply want to live without them – and that is a completely valid and respectable decision.
Before and after
Removal of implants, Allergan 335 ml, plus a major breast lift and 420 ml of fat in each breast to restore volume.

Here you'll find the whole process step by step — from your consultation to the first weeks at home. If there's anything you can't find an answer to, bring it along to your consultation.
Implant removal is a safe procedure. The most relevant complications are bleeding, infection and unsightly scarring. With pronounced capsular fibrosis or complicated previous surgery, the procedure can be more technically demanding, and it may be necessary to place a drain during the operation.
Removing implants is a decision that deserves calm, time and the right guidance. At Caolín, every treatment journey begins with a no-obligation consultation, where we meet you with expertise and understanding.
You are welcome to bring someone with you, and you can always contact us with questions while you are making up your mind.
It depends on the elasticity of the skin, the size of the implants and how long they have been in place. Younger skin with good elasticity retracts better. Larger implants that have been in place for a long time typically leave more excess skin. Many people choose to combine the removal with a breast lift or fat grafting for a more harmonious result.
Not necessarily. It is assessed individually, based on the condition of the capsule, your symptoms and whether there are signs of rupture. In uncomplicated cases the capsule can be left in place. With pronounced capsular fibrosis, rupture or a wish for complete removal, a capsulectomy is recommended – and in particular cases an en bloc capsulectomy.
Yes, and it is a very common combination. A breast lift repositions and tightens the skin and breast tissue, so the result after removal is far more beautiful than with removal alone.
Yes. Fat grafting to the breast can add natural, soft fullness and improve the shape and contour of the breast after removal – without introducing new foreign bodies. An obvious option for those who want more volume, but not new implants.
Yes, it is entirely possible to choose new implants at a later date.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. We reuse the existing incision to avoid unnecessary new scars.
The process
The process begins with a thorough consultation, where you meet your plastic surgeon in calm, reassuring surroundings. Here we take the time to understand your wishes, your experience with your implants and your expectations for the time after the surgery.
Together we assess the shape of the breast, the quality of the skin and how the tissue is expected to change after removal. We also talk about whether other treatments such as a breast lift or fat grafting could be relevant in creating the result you want. It is important to us that you feel reassured, well informed and met with both expertise and understanding before you make your decision.
Once your treatment plan is in place, we guide you thoroughly through all the preparations leading up to the day of surgery. You will receive information about fasting, medication, supplements and smoking, among other things, as these factors can affect safety, wound healing and the final result.
We also recommend that you prepare for your first days at home in advance, so you can give your body the rest it needs to recover after the surgery. On the day of surgery, you arrive having fasted and wearing comfortable clothes, and our team makes sure you feel reassured and well prepared before the treatment begins.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes around an hour, depending on the extent of the operation. Before the surgery, the surgeon goes through the plan with you one last time and marks the area.
During the surgery, the implants are removed, often through the existing scar to minimise further scar tissue. In some cases it may also be necessary to remove capsule tissue around the implant, or to combine the treatment with other corrective procedures. When the surgery is complete, the wounds are gently closed with dissolvable sutures, and you are fitted with a supportive bra that helps the breasts heal in the desired position.
After the surgery, the area will typically be swollen and tender for the first couple of weeks, and it is normal to experience some numbness or altered sensation in the nipples, which often diminishes with time. Most people can return to lighter everyday activities after a few days, while more physically demanding activity and exercise should wait 4-6 weeks. The appearance of the breasts after removal depends on several factors – among them the elasticity of the skin, how long the implants have been in place, and whether a lift is carried out at the same time. Some people experience a natural and satisfying result straight away, while others may have loose skin or an altered shape, which may require a subsequent corrective procedure.
Many people choose to combine the removal with a breast lift to achieve a lifted, firmer result, or with fat grafting to add natural, soft fullness and improve the shape without new implants. These options are discussed and planned thoroughly at your consultation.
Your journey begins with a personal consultation. Here we go through your wishes and options, so that together we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
