A breast reduction can reduce the size and weight of the breasts while lifting the shape of the breast and bringing it into harmony with the rest of the body. During the procedure, excess tissue is removed, after which the breast is shaped and lifted to better suit the body's proportions. The treatment is well suited to you if you experience physical discomfort or want a lighter, more balanced feeling in your body.
At Caolín, we work with respect for the body's natural proportions and focus on results that both feel natural and bring greater comfort in everyday life.
At a glance
A breast reduction – also known as reduction mammaplasty – is a surgical procedure that removes excess glandular and fatty tissue as well as skin from the breasts, so they appear smaller, lighter and more harmonious in size. At the same time, the breast and nipple are lifted to a more optimal position, and the result is firmer, lifted breasts that are better in proportion to the rest of the body.
The procedure therefore corrects both size and shape at the same time, and for many patients it is this combination that brings the most marked improvement in quality of life.
A breast reduction is relevant when the size and weight of the breasts cause physical or psychological problems that affect everyday life:
One of the most common and most debilitating symptoms. Many women have lived with this pain for years before seeking help.
Deep marks in the shoulders are a sign that the breasts are putting more strain on the body than it is built to carry.
Moisture, irritation and rashes in the skin folds beneath large breasts are very common and can cause chronic problems.
Many women avoid sport or certain clothes because the size of their breasts makes it uncomfortable or impossible.
Unwanted attention, difficulty finding clothes that fit and a feeling that your body doesn't reflect who you are can have a major impact on self-image and wellbeing.
A marked difference in size between the two breasts can be addressed and harmonised during the procedure.
The choice of technique depends on the size of the breasts, the degree of sagging and the amount of tissue to be removed. The surgeon always recommends the technique that gives the best result with the least possible scarring.
At Caolín, the placement of the scars and how they heal are an integral part of the surgical craft. We always aim for the best possible scar as a natural part of the result.
An incision around the areola and vertically down to the inframammary fold. Suitable for moderate reductions and leaves a relatively discreet scar. Gives a good lift and a nice shape, but only in a minority of patients.
The most widely used technique for larger reductions. An incision around the areola, vertically down and horizontally along the inframammary fold. This technique makes it possible to remove the most tissue and skin and ensures the best shape of the breast. The scars are more extensive, but are placed so that they are hidden by a bra and swimwear.
Many women with a large bust have excess fat along the outer edge of the breast towards the arm (the bra area). This can advantageously be removed with liposuction at the same time as a breast reduction to make the breast narrower and create a more optimal shape.
Before and after
Major breast reduction, in which breast tissue and excess skin have been removed. At the same time, the breast has been lifted and shaped in balance with the body's proportions.

Good to know
Here you'll find the whole process step by step — from your consultation to the first weeks at home. If there's anything you can't find an answer to, bring it along to your consultation.
A breast reduction can to some extent affect the milk ducts and therefore your ability to breastfeed. The risk depends on the technique chosen and the amount of tissue removed. We discuss this at your consultation so you can make an informed decision – especially if future pregnancies are a consideration. Pregnancy after the surgery is entirely possible, but may affect the shape of the breasts.
A breast reduction is a frequently performed procedure with a very high level of satisfaction. As with all surgery, however, there are always risks, the most common being bleeding, infection, altered sensation in the nipple and unsightly scarring. Smoking and being overweight significantly increase the risk of complications. All risks are discussed thoroughly at your consultation.
Every treatment journey at Caolín begins with a thorough, no-obligation consultation, where we listen, assess and advise. A breast reduction is a very personal decision, and we take the time to understand your particular starting point, your symptoms and your wishes before we recommend anything.
There is always a cooling-off period of at least seven days between consultation and surgery, and you are welcome to bring someone with you.
This is agreed individually and depends on your build, the size of your breasts and the result you want. The aim is always breasts that are in harmony with the rest of your body – not a particular size.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, so naturally you feel nothing during the operation. Afterwards, there will be tenderness and tightness in the breasts, which is managed with pain relief. Most people describe it as mild to moderate pain – and many already notice a clear relief in their back and shoulders from the very first day.
Many patients notice an immediate difference in the strain on their back and neck even before they leave the clinic. The final result, however, is seen after 3–6 months at the earliest.
The result is long-lasting. The breasts will naturally continue to be affected by ageing and any fluctuations in weight, but the reduction itself is permanent. A pregnancy after the surgery can change the shape and size of the breasts.
A temporary change in sensation is very common and is caused by the nerves being affected during the surgery. For most people, sensation returns within weeks to months. Permanent loss is rare, but possible.
Yes, it can be combined with, for example, liposuction and fat grafting to the breasts. This gives a markedly better shape, particularly in the upper pole of the breast.
Yes. The placement of the scars depends on the technique, but in general, the larger the breast and the larger the reduction, the longer the scars. All scars are placed so that they are hidden by a bra and swimwear. At Caolín, the best possible scar is an integral part of the surgical work.
Yes, in some cases. If there are documented physical symptoms and the breasts exceed a certain size (typically it must be possible to remove 500 g per breast), surgery may be available through the public healthcare system.
We work with Medicinsk Tatovering, specialists in medical tattooing to camouflage scars and reconstruct the nipple and areola after breast surgery. The process
The process begins with a thorough consultation, where you meet your plastic surgeon in calm, reassuring surroundings. Here we take the time to understand your wishes, your symptoms and the changes you would like to achieve.
Together we assess the size of your breasts, the quality of your skin and your body's proportions to find the solution that suits you best. We also go through scars, the expected shape and the result that can realistically be achieved. It is important to us that you feel reassured, well informed and met with both expertise and understanding before you make your decision.
Once your treatment plan is in place, we guide you thoroughly through all the preparations leading up to the day of surgery. You will receive information about fasting, medication, supplements and smoking, among other things, as these factors can affect safety, wound healing and the final result. We also recommend that you prepare for your first days at home in advance, so you can give your body the rest it needs to recover after the surgery. On the day of surgery, you arrive having fasted and wearing comfortable clothes, and our team makes sure you feel reassured and well prepared before the treatment begins.
During the surgery, excess breast tissue, fatty tissue and skin are removed, after which the breast is shaped and lifted to a more harmonious position.
The technique is always tailored individually, with a focus on aesthetics, comfort and a natural result. When the surgery is complete, the wounds are carefully closed with dissolvable sutures, and you are fitted with a supportive bra that helps the breasts heal in the desired position. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between three and four hours. Before the surgery, the surgeon goes through the plan with you one last time and marks the area, so everything is carefully tailored to your anatomy.
After the surgery, you are monitored by our staff in calm surroundings until you are ready to go home. During the first 24 hours, it is completely normal to feel tired, sore or slightly affected by the anaesthetic. In the days that follow, the breasts will often feel tight, swollen and tender, and their shape may vary at first. This is a natural part of the healing process. It is important to let your body rest, while still keeping gently active with small movements and short walks.
Your journey begins with a personal consultation. Here we go through your wishes and options, so that together we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
