A breast lift can restore shape, firmness and balance when the breasts have changed over time. The treatment is well suited to you if you want a more lifted, harmonious and youthful appearance.
At Caolín, we often choose to combine the breast lift with fat grafting, as this combination gives a markedly better and more harmonious result than a lift alone. It is our preferred approach, and the method we believe gives the very best result.
We always plan each breast lift individually, with respect for the body's natural proportions and a focus on results that feel personal, elegant and natural.
At a glance
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon shapes and lifts the breast tissue, removes excess skin and repositions the nipple and areola to a higher, more natural position. The result is firmer breasts with a better shape and a more youthful position on the chest.
A breast lift does not add volume, so if you want more fullness at the same time, a lift can be combined with implants or fat grafting.
A breast lift is relevant when the nipple sits at or below the inframammary fold, or when the breast lacks fullness at the top and instead hangs downwards. At your consultation, the surgeon assesses the degree of sagging and recommends the technique that will give you the best result.
The need arises when the breasts have lost the firmness and position they once had. This can be caused by:
The breasts grow during pregnancy and shrink again after breastfeeding, which often leaves them looser and more sagging than before.
Repeated or significant weight fluctuations deplete the skin's elasticity and can give a sagging appearance, even at a normal weight.
With age, the skin loses its firmness and gravity does its work. For many women this happens regardless of body size and lifestyle.
Some women experience a sagging position or asymmetry from a very young age, which they would like to correct.
The choice of technique depends on the degree of sagging, the size of the breasts and the amount of excess skin. There are three main approaches:
A circular incision around the areola. It leaves a discreet scar along the edge of the areola and is well suited to mild sagging. It can be combined with a small implant to add fullness.
An incision around the areola and vertically down to the inframammary fold – shaped like a lollipop. Suitable for moderate sagging and gives a good lift with relatively discreet scar placement.
The most widely used incision for pronounced sagging. An incision around the areola, vertically down and horizontally along the inframammary fold – shaped like an anchor. It gives the most marked lift and makes it possible to remove the most excess skin. The scar is more extensive, but is placed so that it is hidden by a bra and swimwear.
At Caolín, we place great emphasis on the best possible scar. Scar placement and healing are an integral part of the surgical craft, not something added afterwards.
If you want both a lift and more volume, the two procedures can be combined into one. The implant provides fullness, while the lift repositions and shapes. A popular combination, although it does require careful planning, as the two procedures technically pull in slightly different directions.
A natural alternative to an implant. Your own fat is harvested from elsewhere on the body and injected to add soft, organic fullness to the upper part of the breast. Well suited to moderate enlargements and a very natural result.
A breast lift is often combined with a tummy tuck and possibly liposuction in a single treatment for women who want to correct changes to both the stomach and the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Before and after
Extended breast lift with tissue repositioning to give more projection and fullness in the upper part.

Good to know
Here you'll find the whole process step by step — from your consultation to the first weeks at home. If there's anything you can't find an answer to, bring it along to your consultation.
A breast lift is a well-established procedure, but like all surgery it involves risks. The most relevant are bleeding, infection, temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation, and uneven scar healing. The degree of sagging affects how extensive the procedure is and therefore the level of risk. All risks are discussed thoroughly at your consultation.
A breast lift (mastopexy) changes the shape and position, but does not add volume. A breast augmentation adds volume with implants, but does not lift pronounced sagging. The two procedures can advantageously be combined if you want both a lift and more fullness.
In rare cases, a breast lift can affect the milk ducts and therefore your ability to breastfeed, as the breast tissue is reshaped more than in a breast augmentation. The risk is low, but we will discuss it at your consultation if future pregnancies and breastfeeding are a consideration for you.
A temporary change in sensation is very common and is caused by the nerves being affected during the surgery. For most people, sensation returns within weeks to months. Permanent loss of sensation does occur, but is rare.
The result is long-lasting, but not immune to the changes time brings. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations and natural ageing will continue to affect the breasts. To preserve the result as well as possible, we recommend a stable weight and avoiding pregnancy after the surgery, if that is possible.
The final result is fully visible after 3–6 months, once all the swelling has subsided and the scars have begun to mature. Many people, however, notice a clear and positive difference within the first few weeks after the surgery.
The placement of the scars depends on the technique chosen. With mild sagging, the scar sits discreetly around the areola. With moderate and pronounced sagging, a vertical incision is added – and possibly a horizontal incision along the inframammary fold. The scars are always placed so that they are hidden by a bra and swimwear. At Caolín, the most beautiful scar possible is an integral part of the surgical work.
Yes – this is very common. Many people choose to combine a breast lift with implants for more fullness, with fat grafting for a natural, organic result, or with a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover. You only have a general anaesthetic once, and the overall result is typically more harmonious.
It is technically possible, but we generally recommend waiting until after any pregnancies, as pregnancy can significantly affect the result. At your consultation, we will have an open conversation about timing and your plans for the future.
The nipple and areola are moved to a higher, more natural position as part of the procedure. The areola can also be reduced in size if it has become larger over time. In most cases, the nipple remains connected to the underlying breast tissue and retains its blood supply and nerve connections.
The process
The process begins with a thorough consultation, where you meet your plastic surgeon in calm, reassuring surroundings. Here we take the time to understand your wishes, your motivation and the changes you would like to achieve.
Together we assess the shape of your breasts, the elasticity of your skin and the position of the tissue to find the solution that suits you best. We also talk about scars, the expected lift and how the result will harmonise with your body's natural proportions. It is important to us that you feel reassured, well informed and met with both expertise and understanding before you make your decision.
Once your treatment plan is in place, we guide you thoroughly through all the preparations leading up to the day of surgery. You will receive information about fasting, medication, supplements and smoking, among other things, as these factors can affect safety, wound healing and the final result.
We also recommend that you prepare for your first days at home in advance, so you can give your body the rest it needs to recover after the surgery. On the day of surgery, you arrive having fasted and wearing comfortable clothes, and our team makes sure you feel reassured and well prepared before the treatment begins.
During the surgery, the breast tissue is lifted, excess skin is removed and the shape of the breast is restored in a higher, more harmonious position.
The placement of the scars depends on your anatomy and the degree of lift, but is always planned with a focus on both aesthetics and durability. When the surgery is complete, the wounds are carefully closed with dissolvable stitches, and you are fitted with a supportive bra that helps the breasts heal in the desired position. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between two and four hours. Before the surgery, the surgeon goes through the plan with you one last time and marks the area.
After the surgery, you are monitored by our staff in calm surroundings until you are ready to go home. During the first 24 hours, it is completely normal to feel tired, sore or slightly affected by the anaesthetic.
In the days that follow, the breasts will often feel tight, swollen and tender, and their shape may vary at first. This is a natural part of the healing process. It is important to let your body rest, while still keeping gently active with small movements and short walks.
Your journey begins with a personal consultation. Here we go through your wishes and options, so that together we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
